As the pirates depart a sudden storm blows the ships together and cripples the Aurora. The Aurora is attacked by air pirates who rob the rich passengers. Kate has her grandfather’s journal that describes the strange animals he observed and she is determined to locate and photograph the mysterious animals. On a trip back across the Pacificus a year later Matt discovers that one of the passengers is Kate de Vries, the granddaughter of the dead hot-air balloon pilot. Before dying the severely injured man speaks of some fantastic, beautiful creatures he has observed and remarks that, “Kate would’ve loved them.” While on watch on a trip over the Pacificus Matt helps rescue an old man from a crippled hot-air balloon. Matt knows every inch of the Aurora, the same ship from which his father dropped to his death while making repairs during a storm. The story is told by fifteen-year-old Matt Cruse, who is a cabin boy on the luxury airship Aurora. Ken Oppel has created a story in which great airships filled with hydrium, the lightest gas in the world, travel between continents. Airborn is an exciting, Jules Verne like, adventure story set in an imaginary past.

Every story in this is a teaser of what’s to come in 2023 and I like those kinds of anthologies too but whoever is putting the anthology together needs to make that clear to their readers especially because this is a charity anthology and most people will pay for it outright instead of using KU. However, as a reader I like to know this in advance and nowhere on the blurb, description or even the foreward describing what this anthology is about does it mention that all the stories are incomplete and end in cliffhangers. While I prefer ones that have full stories even if they are ridiculously short, I do understand that not all anthologies have complete stories and sometimes they are teasers for books being released in the near future. They are a great way for readers to find new authors and for authors to find new readers. Look I love anthologies and I read a lot of them. Another possible title might have been "Ancient Motifs across Cultures" as another theme is tracking the migration of various ancient motifs as they were introduced across geographies with migrating populations. Davis Kimball, is more likely to have been a high priestess or a "Gold Woman"-a consideration not voiced by the early male archaeologist who worked the dig deciding that it had to be a high-born male, ignoring its size and accompanying artefacts associated with female sorceresses. Hence the famous "Gold Man" discovered near the village of Issyk in southern Kazakstan in 1969, muses Dr. A better title would have been "Musings by a Female Field Archaeologist" as it is an interesting journal of how the same discoveries can be interpreted through the different eyes of their discoverers. The title doesn't do this book justice and although one can't say it's totally misleading, it was misleading enough to make me hesitate reading it. Conversely, our present ecological problems cannot be clearly understood, much less resolved, without resolutely dealing with problems within society. What defines social ecology as social is its recognition of the often-overlooked fact that nearly all our present ecological problems arise from deep-seated social problems.
